The winner of the international design competition for the United States September Eleventh Flight 93 National Memorial was a planned landscaping project whose main feature was to be a sweeping crescent-shaped forest grove. Composed of trees different from the surrounding vegetation, the crescent shape would have been a bright red color in the autumn ---a dramatic note during annual anniversary commemorations each September 11. The winning design, composed by Paul Murdoch Architects of Los Angeles, California, with Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects of Charlottesville, Virginia, also featured a Tower of Voices outdoor windchime structure and other elements. Publication of the winning design was met with negative criticism from those who thought that a vast red crescent visible from aircraft was inappropriate, the crescent being a religious and symbol of the September Eleventh terrorists ---who hijacked and crashed aircraft. Eventually, the design was quietly modified and the name was changed.
